Requirements
The post holder should be able to demonstrate the following attributes:
♦ An understanding of NGOs and a commitment to humanitarian work.
♦ An excellent command of spoken and written English.
♦ An excellent command of spoken and written Arabic and Kurdish.
♦ Excellent computer skills, especially Microsoft Office programs.
♦ Ability to work as part of a team.
♦ Ability to work under pressure.
♦ Administrative skills and ability to take minutes of meetings and notes.
♦ High level of self-motivation.
♦ Good active listener.
♦ Experience and interest in working in the field of safeguarding.
♦ Ability and willingness to travel, sometimes at a short notice.
Responsibilities
Safeguarding:
Safeguarding culture and awareness:
♦ Support in the design and delivery of safeguarding trainings in order to raise
awareness of what safeguarding is and the expected behaviours of ORGANIZATION
personnel. This will include conducting induction training (with HR), refresher training
for all staff and support to the Community Liaison (CL) teams on awareness raising
with communities and other role specific training as required.
♦ Support the publication, dissemination and implementation of safeguarding policies,
procedures and good practice.
♦ Act as an adviser to managers when safeguarding issues are raised or where there
are concerns identified.
♦ Work with partner organisations to monitor safeguarding and due diligence, and
provide support as required.
Safeguarding reporting:
♦ Support the management of reporting mechanisms at all levels and for those who
come into contact with our workincluding all staff at all locations, communities (with the
CL team), partners and suppliers.
♦ Manage reporting mechanisms such as: the safeguarding hotline and email address
according to ORGANIZATION guidelines; receiving concerns in a empathetic way;
and identifying next steps.
♦ Support the safeguarding focal points in programme, provide training and ongoing
support.
Implementation of safeguarding activities:
♦ Monitor ORGANIZATION’s progress against safeguarding activities as set out in the
safeguarding work plan for the Syria Programme, the dashboard and provide support
where gaps have been identified.
♦ Work with colleagues to identify safeguarding risks across the programme and work
on ways to mitigate these risks.
♦ Responsible in ensuring that ORGANIZATION Syria has appointed Safeguarding
Focal Point. Actively involve in the process of SG selection.
♦ Conduct necessary trainings to ensure that all SG focal points understand their roles
and responsibilitie, provide support on regular basis and specific request, and ensure
the follow-uo and monitoring of their activities.
Duty of care and support to staff/complainants:
♦ Provide proactive support to ORGANIZATION staff on personal and welfare issues
across the programme – this may be providing psychosocial support or identifying
practical support such as external professional advice.
♦ During an investigation, if not part of the investigaiton team, be the point of contact for
the complainant or victims and to those involved in an investigation. Arrange external
support as necessary.
♦ Be proactive about setting up relationships with external professional expertise such
as statutory authorities, police, domestic violence units and women’s groups.
Investigations:
♦ Iin response to allegations, with the support of UK safeguarding manager, plan,
manage and support safeguarding investigation.. When requested, act as a note taker
and translator during investigations relating to safeguarding; supporting interviews and
writing transcripts.
Continuous learning and improvement:
♦ Represent ORGANIZATION when required at appropriate sector events on
safeguarding and liaise with other safeguarding professionals to learn from best
practice in Syria.
♦ Liaise with the safeguarding team at HQ to learn from the experience of other
programmes and gain support in the implementation of activities.
♦ Following a significant event (an investigation or incident) conduct a lessons learnt
exercise to ensure continuous learning and improvement.
Translation:
♦ Translate all kinds of ORGANIZATION Syria’s documents from English into
Arabic/Kurdish and vice versa.
♦ Provide oral translation (interpretation) support during training courses, meetings and
events and take notes, when and if required.
General Responsibilities
♦ Work within the framework of ORGANIZATION’s core values, promoting its ethos and
mission statement.
♦ Work towards achieving programme and/or department business plan objectives
♦ Understand and uphold the standards outlined in ORGANIZATION’s Safeguarding
Framework; act with due care and attention to safeguard the wellbeing of anyone that
comes into contact with ORGANIZATION’s work and report concerns if they do arise
♦ Ensure familiarity with and adhere to all ORGANIZATION policies and procedures and
keep informed of ORGANIZATION activities
♦ Undertake and apply learning from appropriate training and development
programmes.
♦ Undertake the role in a manner appropriate to the cultural context and within the local
legal framework.
♦ Other duties as directed, in accordance with the ORGANIZATION Syria program’s
requirements.
This job description must remain flexible to respond to additional tasks or changes as
identified by the line managers.
