Job Profile

The communications officer will be part of the NES hub team and will work in close coordination with Advocacy and Comms Coordinator for WoS to produce internal and external communication and advocacy products. The position will support the implementation of a comprehensive advocacy and communication strategy, ensuring smooth flow of information and high quality case studies to showcase Relief International’s work in Northwest Syria to support evidence-based advocacy and communication efforts. The position will also support the Hub to ensure that messaging, branding and image is consistent with RI global and WoS brand. She/he will work closely with Field manager, Hub Team Leader, Program teams and MEAL unit to gather and develop entry points and evidence based advocacy products, reflecting on needs of conflict affected population and according to international humanitarian law.


REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

 

  •   Masters/Graduate degree in Journalism, communication and media sciences, social sciences, or related field preferred;
  • Fluent writing skills in English & Arabic, and ability to proofread and edit documents;
  • Excellent listening skills in English and ability to take detailed meeting minutes and capture critical discussions and action points;
  • At least two years of work experience in relief or development programs, preferably with an international non-governmental organization;
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems quickly and effectively;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work well in a team and in a multi-cultural setting;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Adobe, and other designing software.
  • Flexibility, optimism, and a sense of humor are assets and highly valued.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Act as an Advocacy and Communication focal point for NES Hub that will also support the overall Syria mission advocacy and communication efforts.
  • Liaise with program teams to monitor and collect and analyze information pertaining to RI humanitarian events and response efforts in NES and to feed into development of internal and external information communication and visibility products.
  • Support the NES Hub and the overall Syria mission in development of program-specific communication outputs for Northwest Syria such as fact sheets, power point presentations, products that meet donor’s communication requirements, etc.
  • Liaise with program teams to produce human interest stories to support evidence-based advocacy, and communication efforts, and grants management team for their reporting to donors.
  • Support WoS Advocacy and Communication Coordinator in mapping advocacy and communication training needs of teams in NES and assist in tailoring trainings accordingly.
  • Support the information and communication flows on the work of NES program teams to the Amman hub.
  • Keep abreast of any updates to the Hub’s overall program implementation profile and update existing communication products to reflect it.
  • Facilitate photography and film commissions. Liaise closely with colleagues in the field to ensure that coordination of photography/film commissions are managed appropriately on the ground so as to avoid additional burden on the teams, and that assets are shared quickly and stored appropriately.
  • Keep a database of human-interest stories and other material developed for advocacy, communication as well as reporting and fundraising.
  • Ensure that at Hub level Advocacy and Communication initiatives are aligned and developed in close coordination with Program teams and MEAL department; and ensuring sign off from Hub Team Leader, under the overall technical supervision of Advocacy and Comms Coordinator WoS.
  • Boost integration of advocacy and comms as part of program development process under the guidance of Hub Team Leader and Advocacy and Comms Coordinator.
  • Ensure a fair contextual understanding of operational challenges and work closely with Field manager, Hub Team Leader, Logistic department and S&S Manager to identify and understand different factors that hinder access of humanitarian assistance.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
